This is a maquette for a Crucifix as part of  commission for a Cathedral High altar. I find increasingly that in designing I move between  ‘physical’ drawing with pens and graphite, photoshop and 3D models. If this project gets final aproval their will be 10 candlesticks and a Crucifix which will be 1,500 mm. tall. There are an awful lot of new and different problems for me find solutions for, from the modelling of the figure of Christ on the Cross to how to construct a rectangular moulded base of wood, what materials to make all the many components from within a reasonable budget, whatever that might be, and whether or not to use gilding. As is often the case I need to research new processes and sometimes to find people to whom I can sub contract parts of the project.  I hope to use light as part of this project.

Winged figures

This was one of a series of sculptures and prints that I made around the subject of winged figures, I became fascinated by hybrids and chimeras, the limitations of  limbs, and the idea  that birds have, in taking to the air,  had to make beaks do the duty of fingers, and in wondering how would Angels manage without hands, because surely they could not have both wings and arms. I rather lost myself for months in  speculations on the curious ways of evolution and what might or might not be practical.
